Why Future Hotels Exists: The Climate Crisis Is Real

14 January 2026 · 5 min read

Climate change and habitat loss are damaging the earth's fragile ecosystems and threatening our viability as a species. There is no planet B — and there is no version of the travel industry's future that ignores this.

Hotels alone are responsible for an estimated 363 million tons of global emissions every year. That figure is not an abstraction; it's the accumulated footprint of energy, water, waste and construction across an industry that, until recently, has rarely been asked to account for it.

We believe a new vision for sustainable and experiential travel is needed more than ever — and that independent hotels, unencumbered by the inertia of massive chains, are uniquely positioned to lead it. Future Hotels exists to find those properties, verify their commitment, and give them a global stage.

This isn't about excess dressed up as virtue. It's about radically adapting the way we build, operate and travel — restoring the natural world rather than simply extracting from it. Everyone has a role to play in this fight. Ours is financing real, verified climate action, one member hotel at a time.
